Directed by Shinya Tsukamoto, who directed “Nightmare Detective” and “Tetsuo” and played Ichi’s master in Takeshi Miike’s “Ichi the Killer.”, this 1999 period suspense film succeeds on most levels, creating an eerie but compelling atmosphere and characters which you’re never quite sure to cheer for or not.
The Movie is about a wealthy doctor who’s life is uprooted by the appearance of his twin brother, whom does not have kind intentions…
although parts of this movie seemed to move slow, the majority of it held my attention, and in the end, won me over. Ryo plays the doctors wife and gives a very moving performance…I found her to be the single character I really cared about.
I did have to get past some of the period elements. The hair and lack of eyebrows(or in this case, make up to hide the eyebrows,) did subtract from the beauty of the film, but added to it’s unsettling atmosphere.
I give this movie 3 and a half out of 5 stars. Worth checking out if your a fan of director Shinya’s other work.
